ARSENE WENGER has denied Arsenal have made a move to sign Wayne Rooney.
Unhappy Roo wants to quit Manchester United and has even slapped in a transfer request
which was rejected. The Gunners have been linked with a sensational bid to bring the England
striker to the Emirates Stadium. But boss
Wenger has poured cold water on talk he is
trying to
sign Rooney ahead of Arsenal’s final game of
the season at Newcastle on Sunday.
The Frenchman said: “We are only interested in
our game with Newcastle on Sunday.
“We have no interest in anybody. I do not know if
United will sell Rooney.
“That is the best sign to show that we have not
made any approach for him.
“The first thing would be to call United, which we
have not done. We are focused on Sunday.”
Should Arsenal win on Sunday, they will qualify
for the Champions League for the 17th season
in a row.But with rivals Tottenham breathing
down their necks, Wenger knows his side cannot
afford any slip-ups on Tyneside. He added: “We
are in a position where nobody expected us to
be. We have our destiny in our hands, our fate in
our hands and that’s what you fight for in the
game.“It is a game that we will now want to win but at least we fought back to be in a position
where we master our own fate.”
